Stevie was dropped by her first record label. She went on to become THE Stevie Nicks.
Stevie grew up with an overprotective mother who kept her at home more than most other kids. The overprotectiveness coupled with the family’s moving from town to town frequently caused Stevie to spend a lot of time in her room playing records.
During her senior year in high school, Nicks met Lindsey Buckingham and the two began a musical and romantic partnership. When Buckingham’s band lost a couple of members, he asked Stevie to join. Soon, they were opening for Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.
Their band fell apart in 1972 but Stevie and Lindsey kept writing songs. The two managed to secure a record deal but their first album was not a success and they were dropped by the record label.
Soon, Buckingham contracted mono and was unable to work. Money was scarce and Nicks began working multiple jobs, waiting tables and cleaning houses. Once back on his feet, Buckingham landed a job with the Everly Brothers but Nicks stayed behind.
In 1974, Mick Fleetwood heard Buckingham Nicks song, “Frozen Love.” Mick invited Lindsey to join Fleetwood Mac. Lindsey refused saying he and Stevie were a package deal. Mick agreed to take them both.
Stevie didn’t give up.
“My life is a testament to believing that if you want something you can make it happen.” – Nicks
