Andy Warhol suffered from a disease that causes involuntary moment in the extremities, causing him to be confined to bed for months. He placed pictures of movie stars around his bed and spent his time drawing. Warhol described this period as essential in developing his personality and art skills. Adversity is your alley.
After graduating from high school, Warhol intended to to become an art teacher. His plans, however, changed and decided to go into commercial art instead. After graduating from what is now Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, he moved to New York City and began a career in advertising and illustration.
Warhol became a leading figure in pop art and his best known works include the Campbell’s Soup Can and the Marilyn Diptych. In 2022, his Shot Sage Blue Marilyn sold for 195 million dollars.
In 1968, Warhol was shot outside his studio, The Factory. He was seriously wounded but did survive. He, however, suffered from the effects of this event for the rest of his life, yet he continued to produce.
“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” – Warhol
